Location

The Legion Clubhouse was originally located on parklands just outside of Smallville, a suburb of Great Metropolis. The great skyline of Metropolis was once a distant site on the horizon, but by 2967, the rapidly expanding city eventually surrounded the Clubhouse. Metropolis Stadium and Metropolis Spaceport are only scant minutes away by flight-ring. Metro-Square is only seconds away by flight-ring.

The semi-buried, upside-down rocket design suggests that the building was erected in the exact location where Superbaby's rocket from Krypton crash-landed in 1923 just outside of the town of Smallville. The team's inspiration, after all, was the Boy of Steel himself, so for their clubhouse to be built there would be fitting.

The Legion's park-like endowment lands have undergone dramatic change over the years. At first the clubhouse just rested its weight on the ground, but by 2964, the team had started to build rooms and chambers beneath the surface. By 2966, additional buildings were built, such as the Arsenal, connected by underground passages to the central building.

Construction

The Legion Clubhouse was built of a uniquely experimental design; it was constructed three-dimensionally, then "collapsed" upon itself and "extruded" into the 4th-dimension. Just as a square in the 2nd dimension can be turned into a cube of the 3rd dimension by moving it at right angles to itself. Similarly, an unfolded cube becomes a 2-dimensional "t" and an unfolded hyper-cube becomes a 3-dimensional "t". In this way, the Legion Clubhouse is like a Tesseract or Hypercube (or hyper-cylinder, in this case), with the clubhouse being of greater size on the inside (the 4th-dimension) than it appears to be on the outside (the 3rd-dimension). Rond Vidar's collapsible Time Cube is constructed in much the same way.

This is the reason that the Legion Clubhouse often looks so small on the outside, sometimes no bigger than an elevator car, yet on the inside it can comfortably fit two-dozen Legionnaires into several floors. Just as a three-dimensional object casts a two-dimensional shadow, the 4th-dimensional clubhouse casts 3-dimensional "shadow" of its true depth, belying its full size. When members step through the doorway, they enter the larger 4th-dimensional interior.

Naturally calling their clubhouse "the safest place on the Earth", the Legionnaires quickly discovered that this was only true in the third dimension. When Phantom Girl walked through the walls of the clubhouse from her own native 4th-dimension, the Legionnaires agreed to let her join if she could make the clubhouse secure against any "ghostly" intruders of the 4th-dimension (SB 147). Today, the outer walls are charged with phantom-proof radiation, which keeps the molecules of the walls' inner core vibrating in a completely random way, thus preventing the synchronization of intruding molecules (AD 377 letter column). Most of the clubhouse's walls are lead-lined as well (AD 320), except for the top-most room (AD 322, AD 325 letter column).

Because the energy costs of keeping the Clubhouse in a "collapsed" state are fairly high, in 2966, the Legionnaires decided to keep their main building at its full, normal size in the 3rd-dimension. Its approximate specifications are as follows:

Height: 80 feet

Diameter: 32 feet

Circumference: 100 feet

Exterior Security

The front door to the clubhouse is electrified and unless the secret turn-off switch on the upper left hand side is pressed, the door projects an electrical force that won't kill the intruder but will render him helpless (AD 314). There is also a force-shield activator just inside the entrance, which puts up an impenetrable field of force around the clubhouse. Mainly it is used to keep from being disturbed by too persistent admirers (AD 301).

Interior

The Clubhouse consists of four floors above ground and two below street level, with underground passageways branching off to several more vast underground chambers. Click below for details on each room:

Arsenal

Clubhouse ArsenalLocation: Clubhouse Sub-Level 2

The door to the Legion's underground weapons room is protected by various security measures. Firstly, there is a grid of green and black-colored tiles that must be stepped on in precisely the right order or two gratings will fall on each side of the corridor, trapping the intruder. If an intruder does manage to enter the arsenal, a TV scanner in the room turns on a red-colored beacon signal that emerges skyward from the roof of the clubhouse. The arsenal contains all of the Legion's weapons and their time-bubbles, which have their own security measure. The arsenal vault contains special weapons and devices crucial to Earth's defense (AD 347).

Sometimes the Legionnaires use the computer for recreational purposes - Brainiac 5 plays 3-dimensional chess with it and the others sometimes get it to see who will have the most fun kissing whom. The computer is also used to create the monthly club newspaper, the Legion Bulletin (AD 323, AD 342, AD 357, JO 106).
